Global Climate Change

Global Climate Change is important if it is truly occurring, and if it is significantly influenced by human activities. But GCC is popularly mis-prioritized. The global issue with the greater immediate impact upon human civilization is Peak Oil and the social and economic consequences of the mismanagement of the world's remaining petroleum. It takes energy to change things like GCC. If we don't have the energy, we can't make the changes, like developing energy from carbon-neutral sources. GCC is a media darling and Peak Oil is misunderstood and unpopular anyway. People don't want to be told that they should be riding bicycles and won't be able to buy lots of plastic products from Wal-Mart in the near future. And they certainly don't want to be reminded that "The State" (governments) controls energy and will at some point be forced to militarize the remaining petroleum if it is not managed.--PGSanalyst 19:06, February 23, 2008 (PST)

Popular opinion on the direction of global temperature change has reversed itself several times in the last century. In the 1970’s the conventional “wisdom” according to the popular press was that we were facing a coming ice age. The press was wrong then and may be wrong again. Short term bets based on that data may have paid off. Long term investments in solving the global freeze were misdirected. Keep your plays short to profit from this change in direction. Don’t make long term bets on global warming.

There is a great deal of uncertainty surrounding “evidence” of anthropogenic global warming. There is increasing evidence that the data are wrong. See www.sepp.org and other sites. As evidence mounts, public opinion may change. Again, if you are trying to profit from this current pessimism, watch out for a change from global warming to global cooling.

Massive government programs designed to combat global warming may result in some huge windfalls through redistribution of wealth. Look for companies that will benefit in the short term. However the size (in dollars and in personal impact) will likely cause a review of the hard evidence. If this happens, programs may end quickly. Again, look for short term opportunities to profit from this huge tax if you want, but get out as the tide changes.
