AS a 25-year veteran of the fixed income business and expert in mortgage securities I have to say, this complicated problem was not properly presented in the first paragraph. It suggests the root of the problem was the mortgage market. It was not. It was caused by the the abundance of credit, reduced risk premiums (caused by the global search for yield), and the lack of oversight. Leverage looks great when things are going up, but they also cause a death spiral when adverse events occur (ones which the system was allowed to create).
