Very informative article. I was kind of thrown a loop at the end when 4G technology was mentioned. Will 3G be obsolete before it is widespread? Also, at what pace is 3G technology being spread? How much coverage is in the U.S. at this time? Other areas, countries? Finally, will widespread use of 3G technology have an effect on local Wi-Fi services? Are there any Wi-Fi providers that are publicly traded that could be hurt by widespread use of 3G for internet access?

The 1st generation cell phone service came out in May 1979. There was a planned field trial by AT&T that was pushed forward by the crash of a DC-10 on take-off from O'Hare. This is way earlier than the mid 1980 date in your article.
