That said, a distinction between biofuel derived from foodstuff and non-edible sources needs to be illustrated as not all sources are created equal. The future of the industry will be driven by production methods which utilize non-foodstuff sources such as woodchips as opposed to corn. Foodstuff is ultimately needed well, for food and therefore cannot serve the backbone of the industry. Bottom line, most researchers and industry professional generally recognize that dependence on edible sources is ultimately inefficient and will negatively impact the emerging industry's growth potential. Private companies active in this area include Woodland Biofuels, Abenoga, Blue Fire Ethanol, Range Fuels, Catalyst Renewables, Poet, SunOpta, Verenium, GreenField Ethanol, and my personal favorite Mascoma.
