A few things need to be updated included the number of handsets sold since the launch. Just this week at the Macworld, Steve Jobs announced that Apple has sold 4M phones to date. And, while it seems they are on target to hit their 8M mark, these sales are less than mindblowing. Second, I think more needs to be said about the international aspects related to the IPhone rollout. Bottom line, while the exclusive deal with AT&T is great, the service is being managed on the EDGE network which is not 3G. In Europe however, the handsets and network technology is more up to speed and I can tell that the IPhone has created more of a stir in Europe. For example, in the UK, O2, the largest British carrier in terms of British subscribers (a subsidiary of Telefonica) gave incredibly generous terms to Apple for future data services. Specifically, for revenues generated from voice and data (applications etc.), Apple receives 40% of the pie. For a handset manufacturer that is unprecedented. Apple's entire international distribution strategy is fascinating as they have taken a hard line approach and demanded exorbitant fees in exchange for exclusivity in specific markets. For example, T-Mobile Germany and Orange France are believed to have brokered deals that are similar to O2 UK. In a situation where the company has faired more poorly, China is an interesting case as talks with China Mobile, the largest carrier in China with over 300M subscribers, have broken down. Word on the street is that Apple can't accommodate the carrier's requested revenue share (90 /10) split due to the fear that this will set a bad precedent in similar emerging markets. Good article, but the strategy and international rollout needs to be built up. Add comments or discussion related to this suggestion here. I sync contacts & calendar on my work PC and "pull" work email. When on business trips, it has become the only device I need to keep in touch/entertained. Looking forward to the speedier version with 3G. Add comments or discussion related to this suggestion here. This is an evolving story, keeping the page current on prices and packages is important. The best stuff I have read on personal use of an iPhone is from Jeff Matthews, http://jeffmatthewsisnotmakingthisup.blogspot.com/search?q=iphone Take a look at his comments concerning the useability of the phones and see if they can be used in the discussion of the phone. Another area that affects the future of the iPhone is the availability of future gee-whiz applications. How about linking a couple of blogs or sites that are iPhone specific. Readers would be able to get the latest news from this concept page. Add comments or discussion related to this suggestion here. Also, the phone no longer sells for $499 and $599. Apple only sells one model for $399.00 Thanks 10/20 Add comments or discussion related to this suggestion here. |
