Did anyone actually ask these questions?

Very few of them. We're taking creative license... :) If there's a question you think should be answered here that's not, add it to the discussion page.

What is Wikinvest?

Wikinvest wants to make investing easier by creating the world’s best source of investment information and investment tools. Read more about us.

Does this cost me anything?

Nope, Wikinvest is completely free. (Although, we'd love for you to contribute to Wikinvest!)

What is a wiki?

A wiki is a place where people can work together to write an article that explains something and links to other related articles. The most well known is Wikipedia, which provides a great example of how powerful a source of information written and edited by a community can be. Wikinvest is creating the world's largest investment research wiki. While Wikinvest is not directly associated with Wikipedia, we admire and are inspired by what the Wikipedia community has created.

Who uses Wikinvest?

Wikinvest is open to all. There is no single description that applies to all Wikinvestors. Our community includes everyone from everyday investors to investing professionals and people who work in the industries they cover.

Who writes these articles?

Wikinvest is written by people like you. Articles, about companies and investing concepts, are written by a thriving community of bloggers, finance professionals, retail investors and others.

How many articles do you have?

Wikinvest has fully fleshed out articles (we refer to them as "mature" articles ) on over 800 companies and over 150 concepts, and the number is growing every day. There are many more articles, called "stubs", in less advanced stages, which our Contributors are working on. Consider lending a hand in building the world's largest pool of free investment research.

What's a Concept?

Wikinvest offers a new way of organizing investment research around concepts, trends, and ideas rather than just companies and ticker symbols. These articles explain which companies are affected by a trend, giving you ideas for how to invest in the trend. Concepts link to other relevant articles so you can see the relationships between individual companies, products and economic or cultural trends.

Some concepts we really like include: Solar Power, the Subprime Lending Crisis, and the Success of the iPhone.

What is The Shelf?

The Shelf is a handy place where you can track your portfolio of stocks as well as manage your Wikinvest account. If you're on a page you'd like to bookmark, just click on the Bookmark link and the page will be added to your Shelf.

What's a WikiChart?

A WikiChart is a special chart we've built that allows you to explain what's happening to a company's stock price by adding annotations. Read more about them on the WikiCharts page.

What are Bulls and Bears?

Bulls and Bears are investment nicknames for people who have positive and negative outlooks on the prospects of an investment. On Wikinvest, if you want to make arguments for or against investing in a stock, put those arguments in the Bulls and Bears sections, respectively.

How do I add a new reason or edit an existing reason?

If there's a new reasons to be bullish or bearish, or if an existing reason can be updated or improved, just go to the bulls or bears tab and click on the add or edit links.

How does the voting work?

Because there may be many different reasons to be bullish or bearish about an investment, and they evolve over time, we created a system that ranks the reasons by their importance according to user voting. Go ahead, try it out, it only takes a second!

Why do I need to log in to vote?

No stuffing the ballot box! In order to help prevent people from voting multiple times, we require you to log in to your Wikinvest account and limit voting to once per account per reason.

What's WikiData?

Check out the WikiData FAQ for more about WikiData.

How does Wikinvest make money?

Right now, we don't, and don't yet have specific plans to do so - although eventually we will probably add ads to the site, which will help keep Wikinvest free and independent. Wikinvest grew out of our personal frustration about the investing resources out there today. We opened Wikinvest to the public in July 2007, and since then we've been focused on building the site and trying to make investing more intuitive and more democratic for our users. We are 100% committed to keeping the site free and open to everyone, always.

Contributing to Wikinvest

Why would I contribute?

Feel good about helping to build the best investing tool for investors, by investors. Wikinvest also recognizes folks who have contributed by giving them reputation points.

How do I build my Wikinvest reputation and contributor title?

Contribute! The more valuable the contributions you make to Wikinvest, the higher your contributor points and rank will be. Learn more about your Wikinvest reputation.

How can I become a Top Contributor?

We've developed a sophisticated system to determine which users are making substantial contributions to Wikinvest. The Top Contributors to an article are listed at the top of each article as a way to recognize and thank those who have worked together to create the article.

How do I write in a wiki?

If you're not familiar with how to write something in a wiki, here are some tips to get started.

What are Wikinvest's editorial policies?

Wikinvest seeks to provide information that is clear, verifiable and unbiased. For a more detailed description of Wikinvest editorial policies visit our content guidelines.

What about bias and neutrality?

Neutral company articles and concept pages are meant to give the reader a general overview of the companies and concepts covered and should not be written in a manner that is either biased or opinionated. While Bulls and Bears company articles should still be fact-based, contributors are encouraged to argue a particular point of view. For a more detailed description of acceptable article content please visit our content guidelines.

How do I create a new article?

It's easy to create new articles on Wikinvest. We've even created a special page for you: create an article.

The company that I'm interested in isn't on your site. How do I request that it be added?

Wikinvest only covers companies with at least $100 million in market capitalization, or that are listed on major exchanges. Stock prices for companies that fall into these baskets are less susceptible to manipulation and spam. If your company does fall into one of those buckets, but it's still not on our site, we goofed. Send us feedback and let us know.

Wikinvest community policies

Should I be worried about stock spam?

We review changes on the site for stock spam. Do you see the recent changes flashing up on the blue bar on every page? You can see how people are changing the site as those changes occur, and if someone makes an edit that's not constructive or that runs afoul of the ground rules for the site, it takes just a few quick mouse clicks (by anyone in the community) to undo the change. Read more about how Wikinvest combats Stock Spam.

How do I contact someone if something is wrong or if I have a suggestion?

  1. Change it yourself -- it's the wiki way!
  2. Send the authors a suggestion or comment with the Suggestion Box on each article
  3. Send us feedback
