Is there an API?

I was just about to program against Yahoo Finance (using its Python API) when discovering that this site has much more meat for some solid data mining. Are there any web services available to read data from this page?

What's in it for Wikinvest?

How do Wikinvest's own investors see the site recouping their investments? Will the site take advertising, try to sell products and services to its users, or simply aim to be bought out by Yahoo! (YHOO), Google (GOOG) or Microsoft (MSFT) ?

Hey Robert - thanks for the suggestion. I added the question (and an answer) to the FAQ. The short answer is that we don't know yet, and are focused pretty much 100% on building and growing the site right now. We're also committed to keeping the site free and open to all (I don't think Wikis work otherwise). Parkerconrad 16:49, October 2, 2007 (PDT)
That's great, thanks. I suppose I'm thinking that that approach works well for a hobby site requiring no external investment, but here you reportedly have attracted $2.5M - which usually comes with questions regarding profit and exit-strategies attached. If it didn't, I'd sure like to meet your investors ;-) (Sorry if the topic is one you'd rather avoid, but this is an investment site, so it's bound to crop up in everyone's minds - and indeed is being asked elsewhere)--RobertN 00:55, October 3, 2007 (PDT)
Didn't mean to be coy - we honestly aren't committed to one single strategy. We definitely plan to be profitable, and right now the plan to do this is through advertising. We think a small amount of advertising, tastefully done, will be enough to make us profitable, and means we won't have to ask users for donations or anything like that... That's fair enough, and makes a lot of sense. I appreciate that sometimes you can only have a rough idea of where you're going, and tune up the details as you go along - much like sailing a boat. To stretch the analogy, the trick will also be to keep the crew on board throughout the trip, avoiding mutinies. In my experience being as open as possible with your plans not only keeps people happy, but also encourages suggestions which may make the results even more positive for those with a financial investment. Good luck. --RobertN 14:30, October 4, 2007 (PDT)

When can we expect to have profiles of non-US listed companies coming up here? Is it by design to go step by step, or is it waiting for people like me to startup?

Which markets do Wikinvest cover?

After having a little look around Wikinvest, I could be wrong, but it looks to me like the site is only coering stocks listed on US markets. With the site being a Wiki, it's clear to me that anybody who's signed up to the site can add a stock. As can be seen when looking up other stocks, you have WikiCharts and WikiData. Is it only possible for WikiCharts and WikiData to obtain information for US based stocks, or do you have feeds from systems worldwide. Can we only look up US instruments?

The reason why I'm asking is because I'm English and like to invest in the UK and European (especially Swiss because that's where I'm based) markets as well as the US market.

International stocks are coming very soon. You're right - it is possible for anyone to add a stock - but its a lot easier to contribute if the WikiChart, WikiData, and Bulls/Bears pages are already there. We'll be rolling out full coverage of international exchanges starting this month - the first will be Australia's ASX (since Australia uses the dollar currency, its a good starting point). The UK and other European exchanges will be next, followed by Asia and Latin America. Adamfarren 12:23, August 15, 2008 (PDT)
Oh and one other thing - we've already got some UK stocks - check out PartyGaming (PRTY-LN) and Firstgroup PLC (FGP-LN), for example. The stock price on the chart is in pounds, not dollars, and we're working on getting it to display £ instead of $. Adamfarren 12:57, August 15, 2008 (PDT)
