The KLCI is a capitalization weighted index that maps approximately the top 100 companies of the Malaysia Exchange or the Bursa Malaysia. It is generally regarded as the accepted parameter for the Malaysian economy as it maps the most liquid equity stocks in the market. [1]:

Weighting and Calculations

The KLCI is a market value weighted index, that means the day-to-day price change in each issue is weighted by its market value (as of the start of the day) as a percent of the total market value for all components. Thus, the price change for each constituent stock affects the day's change in the index in proportion to the company's market value. The basic formula for any index is (be it capitalization weighted or any other stock index)[2]:

  • The index computation is as follows: Current aggregate Market Capitalization x 100 /Base Aggregate Market Capitalization

Where the aggregate market capitalization is calculated as: Σ(Price of stock* Number of shares)*market weighing factor.

Composition

Eligibility

Rules for inclusion in the KLCI as of November 6th 2008 are[3]:

  • Companies need to be in the top 50% of market capitalization of the exchange. Moreover, the company needs to have atleast 5% of the total market capitalization of the Bursa Malaysia.
  • The trading volume for the companies on the exchange for eligibility must be in the top 75%.
  • Subsidiaries are not included.
  • Newly-listed companies will be considered for inclusion after a minimum period of 3 months from the date of listing. If a company is suspended from the exchange for more than three months, it has to be traded on the exchange for a further six months before they can be included in ther KLCI.
  • Where a new issue is more than 1.0% of the full capitalisation of MB, Bursa Malaysia may decide to include the new issue as a constituent of KLCI after 1 month of listing, subject to the volume traded for the month is within the first three quartiles.
  • Index constituents which have more than two consecutive years of losses are liable to be excluded.
  • The market capitalization weighting of each sector within the KLCI shall not exceed 125% of their sectoral weight to avoid over-representation of a particular sector.
