HA HA, what y'all been smoking? "Biofuels, however, have been all the rage, and with Congress's 2007 passage of an energy bill mandating increased production of ethanol and cellulosic ethanol, the stage is set for their use to greatly increase - in spite of protests from social activists who are worried about rising food prices." Ethanol is way too expensive when oil is cheap. And, ethanol is way too expensive to create when oil is expensive. The politicians that have subsidized ethanol are no longer in charge of Congress. Electrical seems to be the direction of the car industry and Congress. I see no scenario where ethanol use will "greatly increase". And, politically, the more ethanol is discussed when oil prices are high, the more ethanol gets associated with higher food prices. Ethanol can not win this battle unless its association with corn and other food stocks ends.

I think it would be a good idea to talk about cost parity as oil seems to be currently stuck above $100. If and when renewable energy sources become cost competitive with nonrenewable, alternative will take the next step towards replacing carbon based fuel. The U.S. and Europe are doing much to generate renewable energy but what about the growing economies of China, Asia and India.

I think this article could use some updating. 2004 is a long time ago in the world of renewable energy. I think the current amount of world energy use from renewables is up to about 2% now, 4 times the amount in the chart. Another area that is now being included in the renewable world is small hydro. This is smaller, environmentally friendly hydro power plants vs. the old fashioned big river damning kind. The company links seem a little abitrary considering the large number of companies now available for those who want to invest in renewable energy. I think the who benefits and who loses sections should either be more comprehensive or more generic with links.

The investing world of renewable energy is a mass of contradictions. Fir... Suggestion by 190.64.172.103 on 2007-12-03 12:06:36
The investing world of renewable energy is a mass of contradictions. First, renewable energy will have tremendous growth for decades, but the planet uses so much energy that it will be decades before renewable sources can make a significant dent in oil and coal usage. The challenge for oil and coal is not that renewable energy will replace them but in finding new supplies and cleaning up their emissions. Next for the investor, the choices become interesting: Pure play companies will give the greatest return if their technology proves to be sustainable and profitable, but many of these companies are very new and their sustainability comes into question. Large companies like GE or even the major oil companies who are making large investments in renewable energy still obtain the majority of their revenues from other sources and the profitability of their renewable business will have little effect on the their overall investment returns. Finally, if you start researching these companies, you find many of the better bets are international, especially in Europe, where renewable energy has been a part of the landscape longer and quite a few companies are doing very well in the field. Vestas, Gamesa & REC are mentioned here, none of which are easy for the U.S. investor to purchase. I think renewable energy is a great field for the investor looking for long term growth, but the research challenges are great. Also, do not forget to look at my personal favorite way to invest in this category, the ETF PBD, which has great international exposure and a balanced approach to a lot of companies in this sector.

why is it renewable? Suggestion by 208.67.117.50 on 2007-11-06 07:19:05
why is it renewable?
"Renewable" implies that the energy source is not finite. This is misleading, since no source of energy is truly infinite, but we can analyze a number of cases to explain the meaning of the world:
Hope that helped.
