The 200-day moving average is perceived to be the dividing line between a stock that is technically healthy and one that is not. Furthermore, the percentage of stocks above their 200-day moving average helps determine overall health of the market.

Some traders use the simple moving average for this measure. Others employ exponential moving averages, which give more weight to recent data. A stock that is trading above its 200-day moving average is said to be in an uptrend and is being accumulated; one below it is in a downtrend and is being distributed.
