4/8/14(SWHC) How to Spot a Winning Stock (Stock Blog Hub)

Peter Lynch once said, “Investing without research is like playing stud poker and never looking at the cards.” If you’re wary of doing hard work – of getting your hands dirty doing some research – then I don’t think investing is for you. It’s not a game. Or a gamble. I know people who complain that the market [...]

12/7/12SWHC (Samurai Trader)

SWHC has had a very tough resistance level since early September, which it looked like it was going to break through today after gapping up on earnings this morning. However, it quickly reversed (probably something said during the conference call) ans sold off heavily on high volume. This is a pretty good illustration of what happens when you try to anticipate a breakout (a lesson I have learned the hard way more than once), as this ran right up to resistance and could not get through it....

11/14/12Sky High Option Premiums on Zombie Apocalypse (The Contrary Investing Report)

Many investors are betting on social unrest, soon. Gun manufacturers Smith & Wesson (SWHC) and Sturm, Ruger & Company (RGR) are close to new breakout highs - check the trend on the multi-year charts: These two charts correctly predicted US election results long before the final votes were tallied. 9/7/12SWHC (Samurai Trader)

SWHC is another example of a breakout with a weak price realtive line, which also formed the dreaded black candle, and in this case failed to close above the breakout point, a technical breakout failure. It's hard to ay what it is going to do next, but I think it is likely to come back in and retest that gap, and ifg so, it might be worth a good look then. Until then,'m not going to mess with it.

9/7/12Barack Obama Is Salesman Of The Year For Smith & Wesson (Value Investing)

Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation (NASDAQ:SWHC) reported a very good 1st quarter earnings report, and its stock jumped by 22%, according to Bloomberg. Prior to the market opening this morning, Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation (NASDAQ:SWHC) saw a dramatic rise in price for their shares, and it was mostly due to a high demand for guns. Analysts have indicated that [...]

7/2/12SWHC (Samurai Trader)

Normally a disciple of O'Neil would wait for a stock to clear resistance before buying. SWHC gapped up big on earnings on Friday, but was still well below resistance and probably a fairly risky buy. It did struggle with the resistance at 8.60 today, but finally cleared it near the close. I picked it up on Friday, and had a chance to add to it today when it was actually marginally down at the open, but I didn't pull the trigger,a nd while my original position is up nicely, it is way too small....

5/17/12How to Time the Market with Momentum (Penny Sleuth)

Momentum stocks can be a canary in the market’s coal mine. If you were paying attention to the big momentum plays this quarter, you could have pinpointed when the market was ready to turn lower. Now, with short-term losses mounting, you might have the chance to spot the first buying opportunity by monitoring these very same stocks. [...]

4/11/12Investing in Guns Stocks: Boom Times for Sturm Ruger (RGR) and Smith & Wesson (SWHC) (Money Morning)

The gun business is booming. Uncertainty about the upcoming election and a sluggish economy has Americans buying guns and ammo by the truck load. In fact, business is so good they can't make enough of the stuff. Even though actual sales data is hard to come by, the industry's biggest players are saying business has never been so good. Gun stocks are up big as a result. "Many indicators, including a record-setting 2011, show the firearms industry continues to thrive in a...

3/9/12SWHC (Samurai Trader)

SWHC is closely related to frequent leader RGR (although I will bet you Finviz has them in different industries), although it has been lagging badly for the last 3 years or so. About 5 years ago the roles were reversed: this was a leading stock and RGR was a neglected laggard, which shows you how things can change dramatically in the market. With the move this made in December, coupled with the big breakout today, this may be trying to get that role back. It has a lot of work to do, but it...

9/14/11Forget Gold and Stock Up on Guns? (Wall Street Daily)

Turns out, I'm not the only one on the hunt for off-the-beaten path and better performing assets than gold. Recall, two weeks ago I highlighted how New York City taxi cab medallions trounced the performance of gold, rising 1,030% since 1980. And now Bloomberg Businessweek is suggesting that guns and specifically, gun manufacturer Sturm, Ruger & Co. (NYSE: [...]

Management is doing a good job of driving growth forward with new guns consumers are eager to buy, and they are looking to grow their defense contracting business. Louis Navellier is at it again, telling us that he's found another hot momentum stock ... 11/10/09“$4 Doubler to Hit $8 With or Without You” Navellier (Stock Gumshoe)

Our old friend and teaser adversary Louis Navellier hasn't been spinning so many teasers lately -- I like to think he's terrified of the Stock Gumshoe, and of the way that my brilliant, amusing, and awe-inspiring commentaries tear his teasers to shreds and lay waste to his marketing efforts. Sure, it's a fantasy, but [...]

7/19/09Smith & Wesson - a quick look at why we like it for a KI$$ portfolio (UnBiasedTrading (TM))

Here's a quick chart of Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. (SWHC), one of the items I mentioned for a "KI$$" or "KISS" portfolio. You can see that it's starting to move up again from a consolidation. If not already in, then one strategy would be to wait to see if and when it moves above $7.52 and then buy (or add to a position). Of course this isn't a recommendation, just an analysis observation. I've been featuring it from time to time for several months - I remember posting about it when it was...

6/22/09Holy Crap! Smith & Wesson Scores While Stocks Tumble (Jr Deputy Accountant)

Guns and butter, people, guns and butter. Everyone should have seen this coming. RTTNews: Firearms maker Smith & Wesson Holding Corp., Monday reported a surge in fourth quarter profit, with earnings coming in ahead of Street estimates, driven by year-over-year improvement in revenues. The Springfield, Massachusetts-based company's net income climbed to $7.4 million or $0.14 per share for the fourth quarter from $3.3 million or $0.08 per share for the prior-year quarter. On average,...

5/28/09Bookkeeping: Closing Smith & Wesson (SWHC) (Fund my Mutual Fund)

Gun Shoots are out. Green Shoots are in. Also a large dilutive offer just killed this story - unlike REITs or banks who people shout in glee when they are diluted, Smith & Wesson (SWHC) investors were not so lucky. The chart was a thing of beauty until management decided to swamp us with new shares. Until the stock gets back above $5.75, much like Mastercard (MA) yesterday - I don't like the set up here, dead money... range bound.. below resistance. This chart says short, not long...

4/29/09Guns: One of America's Last Growth Industries - Sturm Ruger & Co (RGR) Beats; Huge Backlog Growth (Fund my Mutual Fund)

I was trying to figure out why Smith & Wesson (SWHC) was surging 10% today outside of general "glee"; I didn't realize that peer Sturm, Ruger & Co (RGR) reported last night. Well folks, we might be shrinking most of our industry especially of the manufacturing sort - it was either guns or butter - we still have massive defense contractors and guns. They will never take that away from us. RGR beat estimates of $0.24 handily ... with $0.30. Go team USA. I need to add to my SWHC...

4/22/09Are Guns and Gun Makers Good Investments? (Trends I'm Watching)

Trend: Sales of guns and ammunition, along with background checks and applications for gun carry permits, have increased greatly since November 2008. Guns and ammunition become more valuable when uncertainties and anxieties increase. Americans have been stocking up on guns since November 2008, with corresponding gains in the stock prices of Ruger (RGR) and Smith & Wesson (SWHC). The big question for investors is: Has the trend run its course or will it continue? Link: Boom in Gun Sales Fueled...

4/6/09Guns Stocks are Still Strong (The Iconoclast Investor)

Today, I'm going to reprise a post from a few weeks ago when I wrote, "Why are gun stocks strong?  The first reason, apparently, is that many Americans fear President Barack Obama and his associates will soon make guns more difficult to buy ... so they're buying them now.  The second reason is fear of [...]

4/6/09Bookkeeping: Starting Smith & Wesson (SWHC) Position (Fund my Mutual Fund)

The two major public gun makers have seen a resurgence as daytraders piled in the past few months. Unlike most "thesis" trades I am worried this one has some footing to it. If you have been watching the news the past month there has been a monster string of mass killings - almost all have been job/economic related. I hope I am wrong on this one, but I do believe this summer when the weather heats up and the "real economy" (non inflated world of stock prices) degrades, a country with...
