This excerpt taken from the ALL 10-K filed Feb 25, 2010. Consolidation of Variable Interest Entities In June 2009, the FASB issued new accounting guidance which requires an entity to perform a qualitative analysis to determine whether it holds a controlling financial interest (i.e., is a primary beneficiary) in a variable interest entity ("VIE"). The analysis identifies the primary beneficiary of a VIE as the entity that has both the power to direct the activities of the VIE that most significantly impact the economic performance of the VIE and the obligation to absorb losses, or the right to receive benefits, that could potentially be significant to the VIE. Additional amendments include a requirement to perform ongoing reassessments to determine whether an entity is the primary beneficiary of a VIE and elimination of the quantitative approach for determining the primary beneficiary of a VIE. The guidance is effective for fiscal years beginning after November 15, 2009. The Company is in process of evaluating the impact of adoption on the Company's results of operations or financial position. |
