This excerpt taken from the BP 6-K filed Nov 17, 2005. Investments in associates
An associate is an entity over which the Group is in a position to exercise significant influence, but not control or joint control, through participation in the financial and operating policy decisions of the investee.
The results and the assets and liabilities of associates are incorporated in these financial statements using the equity method of accounting. Investments in associates are carried in the balance sheet at cost plus post-acquisition changes in the Group's share of net assets of the associate, less any impairment in value of individual investments. The income statement reflects the Groups share of the results of operations after tax of the associate. Where there has been a change recognized directly in the associates equity, the Group recognizes its share of any changes and discloses this, when applicable, in the statement of changes in equity.
Financial statements of associates have been prepared for the same reporting period as the Group. Where necessary, adjustments are made to the financial statements of associates to bring the accounting policies used into line with those used by the Group.
Unrealized gains on transactions between the Group and its associates are eliminated to the extent of the Groups interest in the associates. Unrealized losses are also eliminated unless the transaction provides evidence of an impairment of the asset transferred.
