CEA to DC City Council: Protect Consumer Choice and Innovation

The statement below can be attributed the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® regarding the DC City Council’s “Uber Amendment,” which nearly went to vote today. CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro also sent a related letter to DC City Council members.

“We are relieved that the DC City Council shelved today’s planned discussion of the ‘Uber Amendment,’ and we are hopeful that the Council will leave Uber alone to let the marketplace determine its future.

“The life or death of an exciting new transportation alternative that offers choice to Washington-area residents and visitors should not be legislated by the City Council. Uber is an innovative and successful technology company, and, like many, Uber’s business model disrupts the status quo. In fact, it was one of many startups that just last month showcased its innovation to national lawmakers during “Startup Day on the Hill,” an event organized in part by CEA. Uber represents the type of innovation lawmakers should embrace, not stifle; Uber’s business model should be encouraged, not prohibited.

“Legislating higher prices and fewer choices for Washington-area residents and visitors is atrocious public policy for the DC City Council, and would harm the region’s growing reputation as a livable and business-friendly city. On behalf of our 150 Washington-area employees and 2,000-plus corporate members nationwide who rely on every form of transportation when they come to town, we ask you to protect the our region’s growing image as a tech-friendly, progressive city that is open to new business models, and quite simply, leave Uber alone.”
