Working Capital

At the end of 2008, the Group’s working capital (total current assets minus total current liabilities) deficit was RMB121,291 million, representing an increase of RMB25,156 million from the deficit of RMB96,135 million in 2007. The deficit increase was mainly attributable to new short-term debt, such as short-term commercial paper. At the end of 2008, the Group’s cash and cash equivalents amounted to RMB27,866 million, of which 94.2% (2007: 93.0%) was denominated in RMB.

Working Capital

By the end of 2007, the Company’s working capital (total current assets minus total current liabilities) deficit was RMB95,857 million, representing a decrease of RMB17,566 million from the deficit of RMB113,423 million in 2006. The decrease in deficit was mainly attributable to the repayment of certain short-term debts, long-term debts maturing within one year and accounts payable with the cash flow from operating activities. By the end of 2007, the Company’s cash and cash equivalents amounted to RMB20,384 million, of which 92.6% was denominated in RMB.

Working capital

By the end of 2005, our working capital (total current assets minus total current liabilities) deficit was RMB120,313 million, an increase of RMB1,901 million from deficit of RMB118,412 million of 2004. This increase was mainly attributable to an increase in short-term debts, which enjoyed lower interest rates. By the end of 2005, our cash and cash equivalents amounted to RMB15,121 million, of which 99.1% was denominated in Renminbi.

Our working capital (total current assets minus total current liabilities) deficit was RMB118,412 million as of 31 December 2004, representing an increase of RMB2,370 million, compared with the deficit of RMB116,042 million in 2003.
