Clearwire International Names Infrastructure Providers for WiMAX Deployments in Spain

Clearwire International, LLC, a holding entity of Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ:CLWR), has named global telecommunications equipment leaders Alvarion and ZTE as network infrastructure suppliers in support of the company’s planned launch of commercial 4G WiMAX service in Spain in 2010.

Clearwire will sell 4G WiMAX services in selected cities, using 3.5 GHz network spectrum, under the same CLEAR brand it is rolling out in the U.S.

Alvarion will supply network infrastructure equipment to support the launch of 4G WiMAX service in Malaga scheduled for 2010. ZTE will supply network infrastructure equipment for the 4G WiMAX launch in Seville scheduled for 2010.

“We believe WiMAX affords Clearwire an unprecedented time-to-market advantage in meeting the pent up demand for wireless broadband services in Europe,” said Barry West, President of Clearwire International. “Further, this deployment will serve to demonstrate the viability of 3.5 GHz spectrum for advanced wireless services and add Alvarion and ZTE to the already robust WiMAX infrastructure ecosystem.”

A CLEAR Difference

The CLEAR customer experience is similar to that provided by Wi-Fi, but without the short range limitations of a traditional Internet hot spot. CLEAR uses a wireless 4G technology that differs from Wi-Fi called WiMAX, which provides service areas measured in miles, not feet.
