Operating Segments

The Company's operating structure is the basis for our internal financial reporting. As of December 31, 2009, our operating structure included the following operating segments, the first six of which are sometimes referred to as "operating groups" or "groups":

    Eurasia and Africa

    Europe

    Latin America

    North America

    Pacific

    Bottling Investments

    Corporate

Except to the extent that differences among operating segments are material to an understanding of our business taken as a whole, the description of our business in this report is presented on a consolidated basis.

For financial information about our operating segments and geographic areas, refer to Note 18 of Notes to Consolidated Financial Statements set forth in Part II, "Item 8. Financial Statements and Supplementary Data" of this report, incorporated herein by reference. For certain risks attendant to our non-U.S. operations, refer to "Item 1A. Risk Factors," below.

NOTE 18: OPERATING SEGMENTS

As of December 31, 2009, our organizational structure consisted of the following operating segments: Eurasia and Africa; Europe; Latin America; North America; Pacific; Bottling Investments; and Corporate. Prior-period amounts have been reclassified to conform to the current operating structure.

Operating Segments

        Our operating structure as of December 31, 2008, reflected changes we made effective July 1, 2008, when we reconfigured our former European Union operating segment to include the Adriatic and Balkans business unit and renamed it the Europe operating segment; and combined the remaining former Eurasia operating segment with the former Africa operating segment to form the Eurasia and Africa operating segment. We revised previously reported operating segment information to conform to our current operating structure.

        Our
operating structure as of December 31, 2008, reflected changes we made effective July 1, 2008, when we reconfigured our former European Union operating segment to
include the Adriatic and Balkans business unit and renamed it the Europe operating segment; and combined the remaining former Eurasia operating segment with the former Africa operating segment to form
the Eurasia and Africa operating segment. We revised previously reported operating segment information to conform to our current operating structure.

NOTE 21: OPERATING SEGMENTS

        During 2008, the Company made certain changes to its operating structure to align geographic responsibility. The European Union operating segment was reconfigured to include the Adriatic and Balkans business unit and was renamed the Europe operating segment; and the remaining Eurasia operating segment was combined with the Africa operating segment into the new Eurasia and Africa operating segment. The changes in operating structure did not impact the other existing geographic operating segments, Bottling Investments or Corporate. As of December 31, 2008, our organizational structure consisted of the following operating segments: Eurasia and Africa; Europe; Latin America; North America; Pacific; Bottling Investments; and Corporate. Prior-period amounts have been reclassified to conform to the new operating structure described above.

Effective January 1, 2007, the Company combined the Eurasia and Middle East Division, and the Russia, Ukraine and Belarus Division, both of which were previously included in the North Asia, Eurasia and Middle East operating segment, with the India Division, previously included in the East, South Asia and Pacific Rim operating segment, to form the Eurasia operating segment. In addition, we combined the China Division and the Japan Division, previously included in the North Asia, Eurasia and Middle East operating segment, with the remaining East, South Asia and Pacific Rim operating segment to form the Pacific operating segment. As a result, effective January 1, 2007, our organizational structure consisted of the following operating segments: Africa, Eurasia, European Union, Latin America, North America, Pacific, Bottling Investments and Corporate. Prior-period amounts have been reclassified to conform to the new operating structure described above.

NOTE 20: OPERATING SEGMENTS

        During 2006, the Company made certain changes to its operating structure, primarily to establish a separate internal organization for its consolidated bottling operations and its unconsolidated bottling investments. This structure resulted in the reporting of a Bottling Investments operating segment, along with the six existing geographic operating segments and Corporate, beginning with the first quarter of 2006. Prior to this change in the operating structure, the financial results of the consolidated bottling operations and our proportionate share of the earnings of unconsolidated bottling operations had been generally included in the geographic operating segments in which they conducted business. As of December 31, 2006, our Company's operating structure consisted of the following operating segments: Africa; East, South Asia and Pacific Rim; European Union; Latin America; North America; North Asia, Eurasia and Middle East; Bottling Investments; and Corporate. Effective January 1, 2007, we combined the Eurasia and Middle East Division, and the Russia, Ukraine and Belarus Division, both of which were previously included in the North Asia, Eurasia and Middle East operating segment, with the India Division, previously included in the East, South Asia and Pacific Rim operating segment, to form the Eurasia operating segment; and we combined the China Division and the Japan Division, previously included in the North Asia, Eurasia and Middle East operating segment, with the remaining East, South Asia and Pacific Rim operating segment to form the Pacific operating segment. NOTE 20: OPERATING SEGMENTS

        During 2005, the Company made certain changes to its operating structure impacting its Europe, Eurasia and Middle East operating segment and its Asia operating segment. The Company replaced these operating segments with three new operating segments: the European Union operating segment; the North Asia, Eurasia and Middle East operating segment; and the East, South Asia and Pacific Rim operating segment. The European Union operating segment includes the Company's operations in all of the current member states of the European Union as well as the European Free Trade Association countries, Switzerland, Israel and the Palestinian Territories, and Greenland. The North Asia, Eurasia and Middle East operating segment includes the Company's operations in China, Japan, Eurasia and Middle East (other than Israel and the Palestinian Territories), Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, and other European countries not included in the European Union operating segment. The East, South Asia and Pacific Rim operating segment includes the Company's operations in India, the Philippines, Southeast and West Asia, and South Pacific and Korea. As of December 31, 2005, our Company's operating structure consisted of the following operating segments: North America; Africa; East, South Asia and Pacific Rim; European Union; Latin America; North Asia, Eurasia and Middle East; and Corporate. Prior year amounts have been reclassified to conform with the new operating structure described above.

        Intercompany transfers between operating segments are not material.

    Certain prior-year amounts have been reclassified to conform to the current-year presentation. During 2004, certain departments were reorganized from the Corporate segment to the North America segment.

1    Operating income and income before income taxes for 2005 were reduced by $12 million for North America, $3 million for Africa, $5 million for Asia, $4 million for Europe, Eurasia and Middle East, $4 million for Latin America, and $22 million for Corporate as a result of accelerated amortization of stock-based compensation expense due to a change in our estimated service period for retirement eligible participants.

2    Income before income taxes for the first quarter of 2005 for Asia increased by approximately $23 million due to the issuances of stock by Coca-Cola Amatil. Refer to Note D.

        On March 23, 2005, the Company announced that, effective May 1, 2005, it was making certain changes to its operating structure impacting the Europe, Eurasia and Middle East operating segment and the Asia operating segment. The Company is replacing these operating segments with three new operating segments, the European Union segment, the North Asia, Eurasia and Middle East segment, and the East, South Asia and Pacific Rim segment. The European Union segment will include the Company's operations in all of the current member states of the European Union as well as the European Free Trade Association countries. The North Asia, Eurasia and Middle East segment will include China, Japan, the Eurasia and Middle East Division, the markets of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus and other European countries not in the European Union segment. The East, South Asia and Pacific Rim segment will include India, the Philippines, the Company's Southeast and West Asia Division, and the Company's South Pacific and Korea Division. This new operating structure will be reflected in the second quarter 2005 Form 10-Q. Prior period amounts will be reclassified to conform to the new presentation.
