Hosting providers implementing anti-spam and anti-malware solutions often employ open source software because it offers what commercial products cannot -- it is free or very low cost. What hosting providers often do not measure, however, is the total cost of operating open source software and its efficiency in comparison to commercial products.

"Open source may seem like the most cost effective solution in many areas, including fighting spam or malware,” said Stoney Brooks, director of business development at Commtouch, who will be presenting at the conference. “It is important to remember that free isn’t always totally free, and these solutions often do not provide adequate protection from the growing onslaught of spam and viruses.”
