History

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. is a Korean manufacturer of commercial and val ships. They build container ships, bulk carriers, crude oil tankers, gas carriers, and other cargo ships and tankers. They also build drilling rigs, offshore platforms, submarines, and destroyers.

Daewoo Shipbuilding started with the Okpo Shipyard, compelted in 1981. It merged in 1994 with Daewoo Heavy Industries, only to be spun-off in a debt-equity swap in 2000. They are one of the world's largest shipbuilders, and one of the "Big Three" of South Korea.

Their 2011 yearly production numbers are roughly:

  • 70 commercial vessels
  • 10 specialty vessels
  • 30-40 offshore and onshore plants

They currently employ 30,000 people.
