Dolby Axon 3D Voice to Power Giant Interactive’s ZT Online

Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE:DLB) today announced that Giant Interactive Group Inc.’s (NYSE: GA) plans to integrate Dolby® Axon, Dolby’s 3D voice technology, into its massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) ZT Online.

ZT Online, or Zheng Tu in Chinese, a MMORPG with an ancient Chinese martial arts theme, will incorporate Dolby Axon 3D voice to help identify the location of allies and foes and further personalize players’ characters with voice fonts.

“With ZT Online reaching over 2.1 million peak concurrent users, we need a truly scalable voice technology that can deliver a high-quality experience at low bandwidths. We chose Dolby Axon because it is the highest-quality solution available and is designed for games as large as ZT Online,” said Ms. Wei Liu, President of Giant Interactive Group. “Dolby Axon allows us to enhance and elevate the voice experience by allowing players to better communicate with each other. Ultimately, we expect 3D voice to be a new, significant element of game play.”

“The hallmark of a truly great game is the ability to fully immerse a player in that fantasy world,” said Robin Selden, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Dolby Laboratories. “The excellent design of Giant’s ZT Online has led it to become one of the world’s largest MMOs, and with Dolby Axon, we’re confident that it is an even more immersing and fun experience for gamers.”

Dolby Axon’s key features include:

  • 3D voice, which delivers an immersing, realistic 3D voice experience complete with surround panning and distance attenuation
  • An occlusion engine that dynamically responds to game geometry, enabling gamers to experience voice communication that matches the game environment
  • Voice fonts that allow gamers to take on the vocal attributes of game characters, which can range from a high-pitched elf voice to the dark and sinister tones of an ogre
  • Dolby voice pipeline, which delivers a clear voice experience free of unwanted noise, echo, clipping, and leveling problems
  • Flexible API offering creative integration and game play options to developers, including the ability to create new voice experiences in games
