dressbarn Helps Women Choose the Right Styles, Fabrics and Accessories to Create a Slimmer Looking Appearance Now

SUFFERN, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 01/12/12 -- According to a recent Gallup Poll, today's average woman weighs 22 pounds more than her ideal weight. For the many with a New Year's resolution to drop a few pounds in 2012, this figure weighs even more heavily on the mind. Losing weight is a gradual process; it takes time and commitment. But, according to the fashion experts at dressbarn, a woman can create a slimmer looking appearance now by choosing the right clothes and accessories.

"Understanding what's flattering to your curves, and what's not, can help a woman look her best," says Keith Fulsher, executive vice president and chief merchandising officer at dressbarn. "Adding just a few carefully selected pieces and accessories to her wardrobe can help a woman dress with a sense of style and confidence now that will only grow as the pounds drop off."

dressbarn offers shoppers the following suggestions for "dressing down the pounds" while the hours they log at the gym begin to pay off.

Slimming Style

  • Body-conscious clothes that accentuate curves, without being clingy or tight, are most flattering. Baggy, shapeless clothes won't make you look slimmer -- or stylish.
  • Opt for empire waists or A-line styles to create a smooth, lengthened look. Be careful with pleats; they tend to add bulk to the mid-section.
  • Straight-legged pants lend a more symmetrical look than skinny- or flare- legged pants, which highlight certain parts of the body -- usually problem areas.
  • Opt for v-necks, scoop necks or open collars to create a vertical look. Don't cover your neck with turtlenecks as they can widen the face.
  • If you are shorter than 5'4", opt for dresses that fall just above the knee.

Non-Fat Fabrics

  • Choose fabrics that don't cling and avoid stiff or bulky textures. Avoid anything too tight.
  • Select prints carefully. It's the space between prints that makes them unflattering, so pick prints with overlapping designs.
  • Don't fear the dark side. Opt for darker colors (navy, black, charcoal gray) as your wardrobe base and bring it to life with colorful accessories.

Accessories and More

  • Use accessories (scarves, earrings, etc) to draw attention away from problem areas, but make sure they are appropriate for your size. If they are too large, they may add weight.
  • Wear proper undergarments including all-in-one shapers and control top pantyhose.
  • Avoid big embellishments and buttons on or near problem areas.

"Most women have the makings of some great looks in their closet, once they understand what works with their body today," says Fulsher. "And the fashion experts at dressbarn can help them select the right accessories and wardrobe additions to bring the whole look together."

The way a woman carries herself makes a big difference, too, adds Fulsher. "When you don't slouch and stand tall with your chin up and shoulders back, you elongate your body -- which is slimming. You appear confident, and that makes any woman look and feel her best -- at any weight."
