Tired of bulky equipment, Mr. Furst co-founded the Eastern Mountain Sports retail chain with a fishing buddy, helping those in the Northeast ski in the backcountry and scale peaks.

Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) can prepare you for a life of climb. EMS sells a wide range of outdoor gear and apparel from about 70 stores in the Northeast and its Web site. Outdoor enthusiasts can purchase or rent tents, sleeping bags, and other equipment -- choosing from brands such as Patagonia, Columbia, The North Face, and Teva. EMS offers outdoor skills clinics, provides guides for hire, and arranges day and overnight trips; it also operates climbing, skiing, and kayaking schools in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York.
