In July 2006, Elan and Archemix Corp. entered into a multi-year, multi-product alliance focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of aptamer therapeutics to treat autoimmune diseases. As a result of the alliance, Elan paid Archemix an upfront payment of $7.0 million. In addition, in September 2006, Elan and Transition announced an exclusive, worldwide collaboration agreement for the joint development and commercialization of ELND005 for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Elan incurred a charge related to the license fee of $15.0 million, of which $7.5 million was paid to Transition in 2006 and the rest in 2007.
