As the gift cards are redeemed for merchandise, we record revenue. Over time, some portion of the gift cards issued is not redeemed. Beginning with the second quarter of 2006, we changed our estimate of the elapsed time for recording income associated with unredeemed gift cards to three years from our prior estimate of five years. During the second quarter of 2006, we completed an analysis of our historical gift card redemption patterns. Based on this analysis, we concluded that three years after the gift card is issued, we can determine the portion of the liability where redemption is remote. In the second quarter of fiscal 2006, this change in estimate resulted in income recognition of approximately $31 million before tax in other income and is included in operating expenses.
