The machine tool capacity that resides in the auto industry is too important to lose. A country that has no machine tool capacity is a Third World country. We have lost a good deal of this capability because of stupid decisions made by the industry and government, but we must keep all we have left, retool unused plants and rehire laid-off workers to produce something in addition to cars. I suggest components for infrastructure building or nuclear reactors; both products have uses in either the domestic or foreign markets. I would approve spending stimulus money for this purpose; not for the effort to recapture the domestic auto market they lost to the Japanese because tariff protection was removed. Removing tariff protection is the action of the self-destructive.
