Gran Tierra Energy (AMEX:GTE) is an oil and gas exploration company. Gran Tierra acquires promising regions, explores and develops them, and sells the resulting fuel to larger companies. The properties are all located in South America, though this may be subject to change depending on where opportunities are. Gran Tierra's business relies on receiving exploration and drilling rights for regions in South America.[1]
For the full year 2010, Gran Tierra reported a total revenue of $373M. This compares to a total revenue of $263M in 2009. The company also had a net income of $37M in 2010 and $14M in 2009.[2]
Gran Tierra focuses its efforts on South American oil reserves. The ability to explore and develop wells in these regions must be accepted by the local and regional governments. The competition for these licenses is highly competitive as there are a large number of other oil and gas companies that operate in the region. In addition, the rights rely on maintaining a strong relationship with relevant government leaders. This is particularly true in South America which has had relatively high levels of political instability.[3]
