The merger of Riverwood Holdings and Graphic Packaging International through a stock-for-stock transaction in August 2003 led to the creation of Graphic Packaging Corporation (GPK). Headquartered in Marietta, Georgia, the company is a leading provider of paperboard packaging solutions to multinational food, beverage, and other consumer products companies. Graphic Packaging has vertically integrated operations, enabling it to offer customers paperboard, cartons, and packaging machines either separately or as an integrated solution. Some of its major customers include Kraft Foods, Inc., Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., General Mills, Inc., SABMiller plc., Molson Coors Brewing Company, Coca-Cola, and Pepsi. The company reports results in two business segments: Paperboard Packaging and Containerboard/Other, and operates across four geographical areas: the United States, Central and South America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
The Paperboard Packaging segment (96% of 2006 revenue) includes the production and sale of paperboard cartons for the company's beverage multiple packaging and consumer products packaging businesses. In addition, Graphic Packaging designs and manufactures specialized, proprietary packaging machines that package bottles and cans, beverage containers, and non-beverage consumer products. The company also sells the paperboard it produces to independent converters, who, in turn, sell converted beverage cartons to end-users for use on its proprietary packaging machines. It also offers a variety of laminated, coated, and printed packaging structures.
The Containerboard/Other segment (4%) is primarily involved in the production and sale of containerboard linerboard, corrugating medium, and kraft paper from paperboard mills in the U.S.
