Greenhouse Holdings Inc. (GRHU) is a leading provider of energy efficiency solutions and sustainable infrastructure products. The Company last week agreed to help 10 tequila distilleries deal with an agave waste problem that has been worsening as the tequila industry has boomed.

Greenhouse Holdings will use up to 2,100 tons daily of agave waste produced by the distilleries. The company expects to produce 120,000 tons of compost fertilizer a year for agave producers and other farmers in the region. Company representatives said Greenhouse Holdings will earn more than $8 million in 2011 from these agreements.

The 10 tequila distilleries are small to medium-sized. Unlike top tequila companies like Tequila Cuervo SA and Sauza Tequila Import Co., small to medium-sized tequila companies often have a hard time properly disposing of their agave waste because of the associated costs. Small to medium-sized companies are responsible for 50% of total tequila production.According to the company, 10 liters of liquid waste and up to six kilograms of solid waste fibers are produced for every liter of tequila. The tequila distilleries that don't have the resources to deal with all of the waste sometimes throw it in city dumps and local streams, causing potential environmental and public-health problems and contaminating the water supply.

Alex Viecco, director of operations for Greenhouse Soluciones, a wholly owned subsidiary of the California-based company that was created specifically for this project, stated:

"As the tequila industry continues growing, production also grows and therefore so do the problems of production,"These tequila companies came to us for a solution to the waste problem and we will work with them on managing these issues so that they can be environmentally efficient while maximizing their revenue."
