The steel industry is historically cyclical and may soon face a downturn. A large portion of Harsco's revenues are generated from the steel industry, so any trouble would cause similar problems for Harsco.

China's increased presence in the steel industry may work against Harsco. China has driven up international demand for steel but has also been drastically expanding its production facilities, and is expected to soon become a net exporter. This may work to displace some of Harsco's current clients in the steel industry, and there is no guarantee that the rising Chinese steel industry would demand Harsco's services.
