The company went public in 1996 and American International Group, Inc. (AIG), one of its original sponsors. Other forms of reinsurance coverage provided by IPC Holdings include aviation, marine, property-per-risk excess (reinsurance of risks above the reinsured party's desired level of loss retention on a single risk), and retrocessional (reinsurance coverage to other reinsurance companies). While the majority of IPC Holdings' gross written premiums (GWP) are generated from domestic markets, Europe (including the United Kingdom), Japan, Australia, New Zealand, in addition to other worldwide operations are also substantial contributors to the company's GWP.
