IShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (IWM)

QUOTE AND NEWS
EX-SKF  Jul 2
The market movements these days are very predictable in a sense. There is a spike in the morning that will keep the indices floating most of the day, or there's a spike at the end of day that miraculously saves the day from any severe loss. Today...
My Trader's Journal  Jun 18
As I've sat on the sidelines with most of my cash idle for the past few months I've missed out on a lot of the rally.  I decided I should make an attempt at putting a little more money at risk.  I've made a few individual stock trades, but...
Condor Options  Jun 17
Member D. S. posed the following question: I've been trading SPY iron condors for some time now and I have been opening them at very similar levels to yourselves. However I have been using much wider spreads, so whereas you use a $2 spread I...
Zero Hedge  Jun 10
Looks like not even Lloyd can take on mighty Jamie and his ravenous ETF hoovermatic: today migrating from boring old SPY to the uber-insane IWM. Just a reminder for Jamie's unmovable bastion of ETF fortitude: here is Lloyd's message - loud, clear...

As pictured below, equity indexes have been highly range-bound since the end of April.  That trading range has been between about 470 and 510 in the Russell 2000, and 865 and 930 in the S&P 500. I doubt that this range is likely to persist...

No trade, yet. I am leaning bullish for the afternoon. If we can get a nice pullback, I will enter a trade. It will likely be TNA, as I see some explosive energy beneath the $RUT/IWM index. Low has been put in for...
Zero Hedge  May 19
The IWM unwind is getting more and more desperate, and as the IOIA chart below demonstrates, some brokers seem to be nicely axed with a solid inventory in the name: note the indicating broker and the constant barrage of trades (times are PST). One...
The Technical Take  Apr 23
At the end of last week, the S&P Depository Receipts (symbol: SPY) and i-Shares Russell 2000 Index (symbol: IWM) barely closed above the most immediate significant pivot point or resistance level. In general, this would be considered a bullish...

The IShares Russell 2000 Index Fund, symbol IWM, is an exchange traded fund (ETF) designed to track the Russell 2000 Stock Index before fees and expenses. The Russell 2000 Index is a global index of small capitalization funds. IWM has been in existence since 5/22/2000.

IWM gives the investor exposure to the bulk of the U.S. small capitalization stocks. Some believe that small cap stock can give individual investors an advantage over institutional investors. Institutional investors cannot invest in small cap companies without significantly affecting the market value. Also, small cap and large cap stocks often have different cycles of advance and decline and investors may catch different cycles (preferably up cycles) by switching between large and small cap stocks.

[edit] Russell 2000 Index

The Russell 2000 Index is comprised of a subset of the Russell 3000 Index. The indexes contain 3000 and 2000 stocks respectively. The Russell 3000 stocks make up 98% of the market capitalization of all traded U.S. stocks. The Russell 2000 stocks have a total market capitalization of just 10% of the entire Russell 3000.

Here are some statistics on the Russell 2000 stocks (as of 1/31/2008):

  • Average market cap: $1.316 billion
  • Median market cap: $ 541 million
  • Largest company by market cap: $7.874 billion
  • Smallest company by market cap: $38 million
