Electronic Materials Sales growth of 11% was primarily due to strong growth for Ablestik as a result of strong demand from the semiconductor industry in response to the growth of demand for electronic devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players. Emerson & Cuming sales were ahead of last year. Regionally, sales growth was good in Europe and North America but sales in Latin America were lower. Gross margin percentages were significantly lower due to higher raw material costs, particularly for silver, however, trading profit was 5% ahead of last year.
Electronic Materials National Starch also manufactures, markets and sells a range of electronic materials, particularly adhesives, encapsulants and specialty coatings used in the assembly of semiconductor packages and the production of electronic, automotive, medical and aerospace devices. Within the Electronic Materials division, Ablestik supplies adhesives and encapsulants used for semiconductor packaging and microelectronic assembly. Products include adhesive pastes,
printable paste and films, and underfill encapsulants. Emerson and Cuming supplies adhesives, encapsulants, and coatings used in the fabrication of electronic, electrical, and electromechanical components.
