Johnson Controls participates in the Green Button initiative for energy efficiency

MILWAUKEE, June 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Johnson Controls, a global leader in delivering solutions that increase efficiency in buildings, today announced its participation in the Green Button initiative. This White House-inspired, industry-led initiative, allows commercial and residential customers to securely download detailed energy usage from their utility's website.

A Green Button link will be integrated into Johnson Controls' award-winning Panoptix(TM) solution. Panoptix(TM) is a comprehensive cloud-based platform that makes it easy to collect and manage data from various commercial building systems and other data sources, troubleshoot infrastructure problems, monitor a building's energy performance and communicate with industry peers.

"The Green Button initiative is a natural fit with Johnson Control's commitment to providing our customers with accurate, timely and actionable information about their energy use," said Clay Nesler, vice president, global energy and sustainability, Building Efficiency, Johnson Controls. "The Green Button link will provide Panoptix(TM) users with automated access and analysis of energy data, which is critical to increasing building energy efficiency and reducing costs."

Green Button was inspired by a call from President Obama for a national effort to help consumers control their energy bills. The initiative was launched earlier this year by a nationwide coalition of utilities, taking advantage of the smart grid's two-way communications capabilities. To date, at 22 utilities and electric suppliers have implemented or committed to provide Green Button functionality.

The fifth annual global Energy Efficiency Indicator Survey, released in 2011 and led by the Johnson Controls' Institute for Building Efficiency, the International Facility Management Association and the Urban Land Institute, showed energy cost savings to be a major motivator among building owners making energy-efficiency investments. It also showed that organizations which review and analyze their energy usage at least monthly implement twice as many energy improvement measures than organizations that do not.

The commitment to support the Green Button Initiative is being announced in conjunction with the Clinton Global Initiative America meeting in Chicago.

"Buildings account for 40 percent of global energy usage, so the growing efforts to help make buildings more energy efficient is smart business," Nesler said. "Efforts such as the Green Button Initiative, with broad support from utility companies and partners such as Johnson Controls can make a significant difference in saving energy, reducing costs and protecting the environment."

Johnson Controls has proven success in helping some of the most iconic buildings reduce energy use. One year after an innovative building retrofit project, New York's Empire State Building has exceeded its energy-efficiency guarantee by five percent, saving $2.4 million and establishing a commercial real estate model for reducing costs, maximizing return on investment and increasing real estate value.
