Local Documentary Gets Statewide Premiere on Michigan Public TV

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- While thousands have visited Ann Arbor's Traverwood Branch Library, few realize it is Michigan's only library to reuse diseased ash trees throughout the building. Viewers of "Up From Ashes," will relive every aspect of the building experience including the creative design process and stressful crunch of deadlines. The film includes perspectives from the architects, the library director and skilled craftsmen. Developers took a unique approach by harvesting hundreds of ash trees that were devastated by the Emerald Ash Borer and reused the trees in the building.

The "Up From Ashes" story was researched and chronicled in a documentary produced by KDN Films Inc., in Madison Heights, Michigan. The hour-long documentary will be broadcast on Michigan Public Television stations from Detroit to Marquette throughout the month of October. Michigan PBS stations include WTVS, WFUM, WCMU, WKAR, WNMU, WDCQ and WGVU.

KDN Films captured each step of the construction combining both primitive and modern construction methods. Viewers are treated to a behind the scenes view of the drawing board designs, deadlines and 1-ton draft horses harvesting the lumber. "Up From Ashes" audience members also experience the anxiety of the development team when design and structure challenges arise.

"Our viewers will enjoy this intriguing film," said Jeff Forster, vice president of production and station enterprises for WTVS Channel 56 - Detroit Public Television.

According to Bill Kubota, "Up From Ashes" Director and Cinematographer, "The film really gives viewers a feel of what went into this project. We started with axes and draft horses and ended with modern methods and fine craftsmanship. The reuse of the ash trees was incredible."
