WIKI ANALYSISDeutsche Lufthansa AG is an aviation company with operations worldwide. The Group operates in five strategice business segments, Passenger Transportation, Logistics, MRO, IT Services and Catering. In its specific markets, Lufthansa is the leading company, or among them. The company has an average of 108,123 employees, generating revenue of some EUR 24.9bn.
bullsThis rock solid German airline is in my opinion one of the few major national carriers who will survive and benefit from the current aviation crisis. With their shares hovering around their trough of approx.10.Euros they are very good value for the medium term. One big point in their favor ist that LUFTHANSA did NOT take over the Italian airline ALITALIA, and has indeed introduced domestic routes in that counry to compete with the national carrier. Lufthansa also owns SWISS and has a well established Global Cargo Service, as well as catering and maintenance contracts with many other airlines worldwide. Temporary losses could be caused by severe drops in revenue during the next couple of months due to the current readjustment of globalization, but the efficiency of the company, the position of Germany as the Motor of Europe, and the inevitability of an economic recovery marks LUFTHANSA as a favourite to win.
Business Segments Overview
Passenger TransportationPassenger Transportation is Lufthansa's core business. It includes Lufthansa Passenger Airlines, SWISS and Germanwings as well as equity investments in British Midland, JetBlue and SunExpress. Lufthansa aims to hold and strengthen its position as the leading European premium carrier. The company's goal is to cover all major traffic flows, via and to Europe. Lufthansa wants to grow primarily via the hubs Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich. These hubs cover 242 (of 421 total) connections in 87 (of XXX) countries. In February 2009 Lufthansa added a new company Lufthansa Italia with 8 European destinations to its portfolio. Lufthansa says this will not influence the company's attitude towards the privatization of the beleaguered Alitalia. Concerning the intercontinential traffic, Lufthansa will focus on the growth markets in China, India and Russia, as well as strengthen the direct connection to North America through Dusseldorf, Germany.
