History

Macatawa Bank began operation in November of 1997 when it opened its first branch in Zeeland, Michigan. At that time, many of the area’s local banks were being acquired by large regional bank holding companies, and our founders believed there was an opportunity – and a need – for a locally owned and managed commercial bank. Macatawa started with a philosophy that continues today: provide highly personalized customer service; maintain an experienced, knowledgeable staff with decision-making power; and be actively involved in the communities we serve. As a full-service financial institution, Macatawa Bank began expanding in West Michigan in 1998 by building seven new branches. In 1999, five additional branches were added and the Trust Department opened, providing our customers with highly personalized service supported by some of the most sophisticated computer technology in the industry. In 2000 the Bank declared its first cash dividend and exceeded $1 million in earnings in one quarter. The Bank reached $500 million in assets in 2001 and opened a new branch in Grandville. Macatawa Bank also broke ground on a new corporate center and formed Macatawa Bank Brokerage Services. That same year the Bank announced a merger agreement with Grand Bank Financial Corporation. The Bank reached $1 billion in assets in 2002, and opened 2 new branches as well as a full-service branch to replace the storefront branch in Wyoming. Macatawa Bank was also made a member of the Russell 3000® Index and it began offering discount and full-service brokerage at most branch locations. In February of 2004 the Bank opened a new branch in Walker, bringing a total of seven branches in the Greater Grand Rapids area. That fall, a new branch was also opened in Gaines Township. Macatawa Bank also became the market share leader in Ottawa County based on deposit size. The Rockford branch was added in 2005, bringing Macatawa’s total to 23 branches serving the communities of Allendale, Byron Center, Douglas, Grand Haven, Grand Rapids, Grandville, Hamilton, Holland, Hudsonville, Jenison, Rockford, Walker, Wyoming and Zeeland. Our continued growth has proven that our customer-driven philosophy was, and continues to be, a solid foundation for success.
