NII Holdings, Inc., (NIHD), provides digital wireless communication services in several Latin American markets. The company, which was formerly known as Nextel International, has licenses covering a population of over 296 million in major business centers and related transportation corridors across Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Peru. NIHD's wireless networks are based on a technology called integrated digital enhanced network (iDEN), which was developed by Motorola to provide digital mobile services in the 800 MHz frequency spectrum. Additionally, the company provides analog specialized mobile radio services in Chile. In 2006, NIHD generated revenues of $2.37 billion, with Mexican, Brazilian, Argentine, and Peruvian operations contributing 56%, 23%, 14%, and 6%, respectively.
NIHD has entered a trademark license agreement with Nextel Communications, prior to merging with Sprint, under which it is allowed to use the "Nextel" brand name on an exclusive, royalty-free basis anywhere within Latin America The license agreement continues indefinitely unless terminated by Sprint Nextel upon 60 days notice if NIHD commits any one of several specified defaults and fails to cure the default within a 60-day period. Under a side agreement, Nextel agreed not to offer iDEN service in Latin America before November 12, 2007 and NIHD agreed not to offer iDEN service in the U.S. prior to that date.
