OYO Geospace NASDAQ (OYOG) is a high technology engineering and manufacturing corporation, specializing in the innovation and improvement of seismic data collection and thermal solutions. Focusing primarily on the oil and gas industries around the world, for both land and off shore data acquisition. ^[1] There are four companies within OYO Geospace: Geospace Technologies, Geospace Engineering Resource International (GERI), Geospace Offshore, and OYO Instruments. These four business groups collaborate in the success of OYO Geospace’s two business segments: Seismic and Thermal Solutions. ^[2]

OYO is headquartered in Houston, Texas, with additional manufacturing sites in Canada and Russia, and international offices in Canada, China, Russia, and the United Kingdom. Sales returns in 2010 for the United States, Canada, Russia, and the United Kingdom were 89.4%, 2.59%, 5.57%, and 2.39% respectively. Products are tailored to customer’s specifications resulting in low on hand inventory levels and expenses ^[1].

Thermal Solutions

Thermal Solutions is OYO Geospace’s second business segment. Thermal Solutions develops high technology equipment and complimentary components, to meet the superior quality needed for image output in the commercial graphics industry. This technology is used to analyze, monitor, and research oil and gas reservoirs, with additional customers in the textile industry for screen printing, point of sale, and signage.^[2]

Thermal Solutions is a small portion of OYO Geospace’s revenues, making up 10.1% of total sales in 2010, a 0.6% decrease from 2009. Geospace stated in their 2010-year end financial report, that this decrease is not a long-term concern. All things considering, they had a normal year, as operating income was 1.9% of total operating income, and a 7.3% increase from 2009 ^[1].

Competition

• ION Geophysical Corporation: provides advanced acquisition equipment, software and planning and seismic processing services to the global oil & gas industry. ^[3]

• CGGVeritas: provides technologies, services and equipment companies throughout the global oil and gas industry. Services include seismic data processing & imaging, offshore and onshore seismic acquisition, and reservoir management.^[4] Equipment is developed by the SERCEL division, and includes equipment for hydrocarbon exploration in land, transition zone, ocean-bottom cable, marine, and down-hole environments. ^[5]

• Amphenol: designs, manufactures, and markets electrical, electronic and fiber optic connectors, coaxial and flat-ribbon cable, and interconnect systems. ^[6] Specifically, their Steward Cable division designs and manufactures seismic cable, custom cable assembles and connector products for data acquisition systems. ^[7]
