One of the navratnas among public sector undertakings in India, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) is the largest oil and gas exploration and production company in India, and one of the largest companies in India by revenue (FY 2007-08 revenues Rs. 615, 426 million). ONGC has the rare distinction among Indian companies of ranking regularly among Forbes and Fortune lists, and is known as a leader in its industry among its Asian counterparts. (link to various lists) ONGC is unique among Indian petroleum companies as the only company present in the entire hydrocarbon value-chain.
ONGC owns and operates more than 11,000 km of pipeline in India carrying various products, including 3,200 km of sub-sea pipelines.
ONGC has many assets across India and abroad, and has been active recently in acquiring rights to exploration sites around the world through its overseas exploration and production subsidiary ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL). During the financial year 2007-08, it had acquired 11 sites in 6 countries around the world bringing the number of overseas projects ONGC is involved with upto 38 across 18 countries. Of these 38 projects, 24 are in the Exploration stage, 6 in the Development stage and 7 in the Production stage. The remaining project is a Sudan pipeline project.
