Phelps Dodge Corporation was an American mining company that was acquired by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. on 19 March 2007 for $25.9 billion in cash and stock. The acquisition made Freeport-McMoRan the world's largest publicly-traded copper company by market capitalization.
At the time of its acquisition, Phelps Dodge had large copper mining operations in Bagdad (Arizona), Morenci (Arizona), Sahuarita (Arizona), Miami (Arizona), Tyrone (New Mexico) and El Chino Mine (New Mexico). Several of these locations provide ores rich in molybdenum as well.
