PMC-Sierra, Inc., (PMC), designs and develops high-performance integrated circuits for the telecommunications and data networking industries. The company sells its products into four markets. First, the Access market uses equipment (e.g. digital subscriber line access multiplexers, switches) that combines data traffic from the home and office and connects it to a bigger informational pipe, such as a metro or wide area network, where it can be more expeditiously and efficiently directed to its destination. Second, the Metro area is an optical fiber network that rings a city or region. It connects access networks to the long-haul network. The company's products are found in the routers and switch that direct traffic along the Metro network. Third, the Enterprise/Storage market deals with the transfer and storage of information in a firm. The company's products are found in local area networks, laser printers and storage area networks. Fourth, the Consumer market focuses on home entertainment systems. The company's products are designed into set-top boxes and high-definition televisions.
