Provision For Credit Losses

The provision for credit losses totaled $315 million for 2007 and $124 million for 2006. Of the total 2007 provision, $188 million was recorded in the fourth quarter, including approximately $45 million related to our Yardville acquisition. The higher provision in 2007 was also impacted by an increase in our real estate portfolio, including residential real estate development exposure, and growth in total credit exposure. Total residential real estate development outstandings were approximately $2.1 billion at December 31, 2007.

Provision For Credit Losses

The provision for credit losses was $124 million for 2006 compared with $21 million for 2005. The provision for credit losses for 2005 included the benefit of a $53 million loan

recovery in the second quarter of that year resulting from a litigation settlement. In addition to this item, the increase in the provision for credit losses in 2006 reflected the following factors:

The impact of overall loan growth, as average total loans increased $2.2 billion in 2006 compared with the prior year;

The effect of a single large overdraft situation that occurred during the second quarter of 2006, and

Growth in unfunded commitments.

Provision For Credit Losses

The provision for credit losses decreased $31 million, to $21 million, for 2005 compared with 2004. The decline in the provision for credit losses was primarily due to the benefit of a $53 million loan recovery in the second quarter of 2005 resulting from a litigation settlement, in addition to continued strong asset quality. The favorable impact of these factors on the provision was partially offset by the impact of total average loan and commitments growth in 2005 compared with the prior year.
