Many Panasonic products are perceived as the sort that drop in price over time. Deflationary trends in the larger economy will put more and more people into the "wait for the price to go down" mindset. In addition, there is no 'must have' product in the category this year -- no plasma TV or DVD player or similar. Blu-ray DVD players may be the next must-have category but it's unlikely they'll reach critical mass for this 2008 recessionary holiday season. The studios will support Blu-ray less than otherwise as they keep a tighter rein on marketing expenses. The risk to Panasonic is that any "Blu-ray buzz" gets attenuated, and instead of a buying frenzy there's a slow adoption. That gives lots of time for deflation to take hold and (even) lower-cost competitors to enter. The no-buzz scenario is the worst case; the less-bearish case is that there is buzz, but not till the 2009 holidays.
