This excerpt taken from the PBR 6-K filed Mar 31, 2009. b) Main transactions and future commitments that are the object of economic hedge In September 2006, we contracted a economic hedge operation known as a cross currency swap for coverage of the bonds issued in Yens in order to fix the companys costs in this operation in dollars. In a cross currency swap there is an exchange of interest rates in different currencies. The exchange rate of the Yen for the US dollar is fixed at the beginning of the transaction and remains fixed during its existence. The Company does not intend to settle these contracts before the end of the term. In 2008, the subsidiary Petrobras Distribuidora contracted operations which consist of the sale of forward dollar PTAX contracts without fiscal delivery (NDFs) on the Brazilian over-the-counter market, which permits fixing the exchange rate and the hedge against a possible fall in the rate in the period. On average, the period of exposure is three months. |
