Rural/Metro Corp. operates a fleet of emergency service vehicles. The company provides ambulance and fire response services to municipalities as well as private customers. In addition to basic emergency ambulance services, Rural/Metro provides hospital transfers, critical care transfers and other specialized medical transportation. In order to accomplish this, the company operates a fleet of Advanced Life Support ambulances, as well as wheelchair accessible vans. Rural/Metro employs several emergency medical technicians (EMT's), nurses and doctors among its cadre of 8,000 employees.
A large share of Rural/Metro's profits are a result of the company's near-monopoly of the 911 emergency response network in several major cities including San Diego CA, Rochester NY, Orlando FL, Phoenix AZ and most of Atlanta GA.
Rural/Metro also has a large presence in counties heavily populated with retirees.
