PLEASANTON, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—December 13, 2007—Safeway Inc. (NYSE:SWY) will hold a conference for analysts and institutional investors today. Safeway will review its recent performance, establish its 2008 earnings guidance, review its long term guidance, and discuss its strategy to achieve long-term annual earnings growth of 12-15 %.

For the year 2008, the company is initiating earnings per share guidance of $2.25-$2.35 for the 53-week year ($2.21-$2.31 for a comparable 52-week year). The company anticipates that strong contributions from Lifestyle stores and product innovation will deliver ID sales growth (excluding fuel) in a range of 3.0 – 3.2% in 2008. Cost reduction initiatives are expected to provide flexibility to invest in price and promotion and to increase the company’s operating margin. The company will also discuss the progress it has made with its Blackhawk Network subsidiary and its efforts to create and develop new growth vehicles.

The company plans to spend approximately $1.70 to $1.75 billion in cash capital expenditures in 2008, to complete approximately 20-25 new Lifestyle stores and to remodel approximately 250-255 stores into the Lifestyle format. The company expects to generate free cash flow (cash flow from operating activities less cash flow used by investing activities) in 2008 in the range of $500 million to $700 million.

“Innovation has been, and will continue to be, the key to our success,” said Steve Burd, Chairman, President and CEO. “We have developed highly successful programs to reduce costs, improve service, enhance the quality of products and the shopping environment, and have established new growth vehicles. We believe this will ensure our long-term growth.”

Safeway Inc. is a Fortune 100 company and one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America. The company operates 1,738 stores in the United States and western Canada and had sales of $40.2 billion in 2006.
