WIKI ANALYSISSpectranetics develops, manufactures, markets, and distributes single-use medical devices used in minimally invasive procedures within the cardiovascular system for use with its proprietary excimer laser system. Excimer laser technology delivers relatively cool ultraviolet energy to ablate or remove arterial blockages including plaque, calcium, and thrombus. The laser system includes the CVX-300 laser unit and various disposable fiber-optic laser catheters. The laser catheters contain hundreds of small diameter, flexible optical fibers than can access difficult to reach peripheral and coronary anatomy and produce evenly distributed laser energy at the tip of the catheter for more uniform ablation. The company believes that its excimer laser system is the only excimer laser system approved in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Canada for use in multiple, minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures. These procedures include atherectomy, which is a procedure to remove arterial blockages in the peripheral and coronary vasculature, and the removal of infected, defective, or abandoned cardiac lead wires from patients with pacemakers or implantable cardiac defibrillators, or ICDs, which are electronic devices that regulate the heartbeat. Peripheral arterial disease, or PAD, is characterized by clogged or obstructed arteries in the upper or lower leg. Based on 2006 results, disposable products, service & other, and laser equipment contributed 80%, 11%, and 9%, respectively to total revenue. Disposable products revenue is separated into atherectomy (66%) and lead removal (34%). Within laser equipment revenue, laser sales contributed 60% while laser rentals contributed the remaining 40% to laser equipment revenue.
