Yahoo! Search Inclusion Phase Out Favors SEO and PPC -- Here Is Why…

CARLSBAD, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/02/09 -- A representative from Yahoo! confirmed today that Yahoo! will phase out their Search Submit, paid inclusion program by year's end. Yahoo! CFO Tim Morse, speaking to reporters last week regarding the company's quarterly report, had this to say: "We think this is a change to help us improve the overall health of our marketplace on an ongoing basis, so it helps us to do it."

Garry Grant, CEO of SEO Inc., one of the pioneers of search engine optimization, has said repeatedly that "Yahoo!'s Search Submit program is a broken crutch many advertisers have been leaning on as a quick fix for poorly constructed websites and their ability to get top organic rankings."

Over the years there has been a great deal of controversy surrounding paid inclusion. The primary reason is the premise on which organic search was based; this being that the search results which are paid (or sponsored) are clearly separated from the organic search results. Yahoo!'s paid inclusion program, Search Submit, has clearly ignored this distinction for many years by allowing advertisers to pay on a per click basis for organic search results.

In response to Yahoo!'s decision, Grant had this to say: "Companies who advertise through paid inclusion are doing so because they are being outranked in the organic search results by their competitors. Implementing SEO would not only maintain their current rankings, but make them more relevant. That being said, it is also important to recognize the immeasurable benefits of a professionally managed PPC campaign. At SEO Inc. this would include keyword research, ad development, landing page optimization and top-line methodology to secure competitive positions and measurable ROI, all of which are not included or guaranteed in Yahoo!'s Search Submit Pro."

Yahoo! has alerted its advertisers that the paid inclusion program will stop running at the end of December, but companies should start looking for viable search marketing alternatives now. For a limited time, SEO Inc. is offering free website evaluations with a complete SEO analysis to companies currently using Search Submit.

SEO Inc. will be exhibiting in booth #1530 at the Ad Tech Conference at the Javitz Center in New York this week.
