Fungicide sales were lower as a result of challenging market conditions including drought in Latin America and reduced wheat acreage in Europe and the USA.  Sales were further constrained by emerging market risk management and by supply shortages in advance of new capacity coming on-stream.  Price increases across the fungicide portfolio partially offset volume declines and illustrated the yield-enhancing value of the company’s technology.  REVUS® sales increased significantly with successful launches in new markets, notably France and Italy.

AMISTAR® showed exceptional growth notably in Latin America, with higher soybean acreage, increased soybean rust pressure and strong demand from wheat growers. In the USA the AMISTAR® range benefited from the development of a new market segment to prevent disease in corn. There was good growth in other fungicides including BRAVO®, which is widely used to counter fungicide resistance in European cereals. REVUS®, a new fungicide for vegetables and vines, was successfully launched in the UK and Korea.

In 2008, we strengthened our world leading position in fungicides in a market characterized by increased usage intensity and growers’ focus on plant performance.  Growth in AMISTAR® reflected the success of a variety of combination products used across crops.  AMISTAR® is now sold on 120 crops in 100 countries and has proven a yield-boosting effect in addition to excellent disease control.  In the USA, fungicide use on corn and wheat grew rapidly, with QUILT® establishing a leadership position in an expanding corn fungicide market.  In Latin America, fungicide growth was broad based across the region with PRIORI Xtra® now the leading product in Brazil for the prevention and treatment of soybean rust.

AMISTAR® sales exceeded US$500 million driven by the penetration of soybean rust in Brazil and increased demand on various crops in the USA. Growth in Europe reflected the market recovery following the drought in 2003 and the launch of product combination programs to combat cereal septoria resistance, notably with BRAVO®.

Sales were 3% higher, 6% lower at constant exchange rates due to lower volumes offset by the weaker US dollar. Sales of ACANTO®, AMISTAR® and UNIX® were all negatively affected by drought conditions in Western Europe, notably France and Germany, which resulted in significantly lower usage on cereals. AMISTAR® partly compensated for this with strong growth in Brazil where it was used to treat soybean rust, a significant new disease. Sales of RIDOMIL GOLD® were up slightly, with growth in the USA outweighing declines in Asia Pacific. SCORE® achieved strong growth on rice and vegetables in Asia Pacific and on a range of crops in Western Europe. Range rationalization reduced sales by 2%.
