Purchased patents are comprised of
patents acquired in the Merger. The patents are amortized on a straight-line basis using the following lives:

Patent

  Life (years)

Phenserine

  8

Posiphen

  12

Bisnorcymserine

  10

Amortization expense for the years ended December 31, 2008, 2007 and 2006 was $391,000, $391,000 and $95,000,
respectively. In December 2008 we determined that the carrying value of the purchased patents was impaired; see related discussion within this footnote under “Long-Lived Assets”. As a result of the impairment, the patents have a weighted
average life equal to zero years.
